“Perhaps on the rare occasion pursuing the right course demands an act of piracy, piracy itself can be the right course?”– Governor Weatherby Swann; played by actor Jonathan Pryce; written by screenplay writers Ted Elliott & Terry Rossio: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
I have always loved that this line somehow made it into a Disney film of all films. Its telling that this line was the last thought of a movie produced by a company that time and time again has fought tooth and nail to extend copyright, trademark, and patent law so that content created in our life times is held under lock and key into perpetuity by basically immortal transnational corporations serving only to really enrich themselves and shareholders and holding control of what becomes part of the cultural shared zeitgeist. How many of you learned video editing, graphic design, built a computer when you were young and didn’t find a copy of software or a book or a movie for source material for a meme off the “BACK OF A TRUCK”. The greater good here educating ourselves to use tools that help us create ideas and thoughts or learn about new ones we never would have had access to with how expensive gateway to entry is. And this is looking at the pricing just from an American paradigm, go look at the cost if you are in a developing country and the gateway to entry is basically only capable if you have a corporate patron of sorts who uses you for cheaper and cheaper labor then. Anyway … just a thought. I really loved this line as a teenager, i still love it as an adult. Let the cat and mouse game continue.
